The Challenge of Legacy and Unsupported Systems
Despite the push for new technology, a significant risk in 2026 remains Legacy Systems. Roughly 1 in 5 connected medical devices still run on unsupported operating systems (like old versions of Windows) that no longer receive security updates.
Because these billion-dollar machines (like X-ray or CT scanners) cannot be easily replaced, hospitals are using "Virtual Patching" and Micro-segmentation. This involves wrapping the old device in a "digital bubble" that monitors all traffic going in and out, blocking any known exploits while allowing the machine to continue its life-saving work without being directly exposed to the internet.
